Dr. Simeon’s HCG diet protocol calls for no exercise, yet you hear people arguing this point back and forth some in support of exercise and others who follow the HCG diet instructions to the letter. So, let’s take a look at why you are advised to not exercise while following the HCG diet. Yes, it sounds absolutely counter-intuitive to rest while trying to lose a pound a day, but once you understand the science behind these instructions you will no longer argue this point. So sit back and relax while your body re-sculpts itself.

Exercise and weight loss
On a typical diet, you are working with the laws of physics and the laws of the body. In order to lose weight you must create a caloric deficit, which simply means that you must burn or expend more calories than you take in each day in order to lose fat. You must burn 3,500 more calories than you take in to lose a pound. Creating a caloric deficit on a daily basis is the only way to lose weight.

Weight loss on the HCG diet
When you are carefully following Dr. Simeon’s HCG diet protocol, you are either taking HCG injections or you are taking oral HCG (sublingual), and following his carefully prescribed very low calorie diet of 500 calories per day. While you are on this program, your HCG stores are being replenished and the hypothalamus is now directing your body to burn off your abnormal adipose (fat) tissue for energy.

So, most of the energy that you need to function will actually be coming from the fat that has been stored away in various locations on your body. You don’t really “burn away,” or eliminate those pesky fat cells permanently when you lose fat. What you are doing is basically emptying those fat cells of their contents, triaglycerol, into the blood stream as free fatty acids in a process called, hydrolysis, or the breakdown of fat.  Because that stored fat is energy, it is released into the muscle cells where it can be processed as fuel.

Exercise and the HCG diet protocol

When you are weight training or doing heavy exercise you burn calories both while you are working out, and later in the resting phase. In fact, if you want to build muscle mass you’ve got to take in additional calories or else you will end up burning muscle rather than fat in your workouts.

Taking HCG spares lean muscle mass and burns fat. It’s doing the hydrolysis for you. If on top of the HCG diet protocol you insist on doing heavy exercise you will be hungry because your body will need more calories to handle the extra work you are requiring of it.
